Biofortification: Foods that Heal

Overview: Most of the foods we partake are deficient in essential micro nutrients like Iodine, Selenium, Iron, Zinc, Copper, Molybdenum, Vanadium etc. Organically grown foods are not of much help either- because of commerce driven farming practices ( Focus on Quantity rather than on Quality) Is supplementation the only way out? Do we need to take multiple supplements to address these deficiencies? How can we use a technique called as Bio-fortification for improving the nutritional profile of foods ( Without resorting to Gene Pool Modification or Genetic engineering that is a part of Classical Bio-fortification )? Modified Bio-fortification: In layman terms , it resorts to using organic and inorganic supplements in the lowest possible dosages so to supply the missing ingredients and to grow  healthy foods that will act as Natural Supplements. So far we have been using Natural Farming practices on our farm. This year we decided to add the missing elements to...

When You Value Nothing More Than God

Before you read on, can you guess the answer to this riddle? What did the Atheist tell the Theist when the latter proclaimed "I Believe in Nothing more than God" Overview: 1. The God debate is far from over. We have Theists and Atheists and then we have those in between- The quantum believers- They are Theists and A-Theists at the same time ! 2. Mainstream science, tries to steer clear of the 'God' debate. They prefer to place their painstaking work, years of research and understanding on a foundation that is made from 'Nothing'. The big bang, they say started from Nothing. Nothing existed before the big bang. The so called superstitious religious people on the other hand, say that the entire creation manifested from GOD. 3. Regardless of which side you are on, we are all in the same boat!  Religious people might call God by various names, Scientists on the other hand prefer to call their God 'Nothing'. Since neither parties h...

The Quantum Mosquito and the SAD Electron

Overview Quantum Physics is not so difficult to understand, especially if you stay in the tropics, have plenty of flies and mosquitoes around you and have noticed that these insects show paranormal powers, particularly when you approach them with an intent to kill. Before we get started, here are a few terms you can familiarise yourself with 1. SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder). A fancy term to describe shyness and to help the pharma industry treat someone who behaves normally. I don’t know about you, but I definitely have it. If you change your behaviour in response to an observer or another person in your space, then you have SAD too. 2. The Copenhagen interpretation: Physical systems generally do not have definite properties prior to being measured, and quantum mechanics can only predict the probability distribution of a given measurement's possible results. The act of measurement affects the system, causing the set of probabilities to reduce to only one of the pos...

Medical Research Paradox: Trying to reverse engineer Self

Summary: We are a technological marvel. Our Five senses are sophisticated scanning devices, our brains have the codecs  to decode and create a world for us out of seemingly incomprehensible data. We are self sufficient organic machines with advanced AI  capabilities.  In a world where certifications matter the most, our bodies have been painstakingly built by the coming together of two illiterate simple cells- neither of them held any certificates or degrees! Every cell that makes up our body has its own life and each cell in itself is a distinct living entity that religiously abides by an embedded set of instructions ( the genetic code). Moreover each cell also has the ability to record their life experience by altering this code (Based on their interaction with the environment)  Commerce and trade within the body is much more advanced, fair and sustainable than the primitive and illogical currency based system of ours. Our body is...

Daily monitoring is the Key --------- Keeping yourself busy is good. It is supposed to keep the body fit, the mind engaged and help optimize your productivity. However in this modern Busy-ness driven world, busy is synonymous with sitting for long hours. And if you are very very busy, then you are sitting for long hours at different locations. I will keep this post short. The reason as to why I wanted to write on this topic is because there ar...

Efficiency : a Curse or a Boon ?

( Summary for those who don’t have the time to read it all ) When losing weight becomes a real challenge.- Could it be your metabolism ? Is slow metabolism really bad – especially when all your physiological parameters are good Is something wrong with healthy people having a slow metabolism? Why would we have evolved to fine tune and optimize energy expenditure? Would you be unhappy if your car gave you a mileage of 100 miles per gallon instead of the usual 20 miles/gallon? Benefits of optimized metabolism ( Increased efficiency ) Why are we unhappy when we don’t lose weight as expected- especially after increasing our physical activity with the intent to lose weight. Time to have realistic expectations and appreciate our body just as we would appreciate a highly efficient car. A better option for losing weight: Using Diet and lifestyle modifications in lieu of exercise alone  Sheetal asked me the other day, “Can you help me with my metabolism issues....

How can we cooperate with the body during a crisis -------- Hari was experiencing flu like symptoms. He was running a temperature, had severe body ache and was feeling very weak and nauseated. He wanted to know as to how he could arrest his fever as soon as possible, get rid of his weakness and be up and running so that he could attend to an important meeting in the office the next day. For Hari as for most of us the biggest problem was the Fever and the accompanying discomfort. When he went to the doctor the doctor gave a course of antibiotics, an anti-pyretic and an antihistamine. When Hari enquired if it wasn't prudent to do a blood test before taking the antibiotics, t...
